Spiral Bound Book Printing: Seamlessly Binding Your Ideas

When looking to have your book, or other documents, printed and bound there are many available options – you want your printed work to have a professional and practical finish that appeals to your prospective consumer. Printed brochures and booklets are a major part of many businesses’ advertising and marketing materials and for company report printing. Among the options available, spiral bound book printing lends itself to certain forms of document or book – here are some aspects of spiral bound book printing, for you to consider:

Spiral Bound Book Printing and Binding

Often referred to as coil or wire-o binding, spiral binding is a common method for joining the pages and cover of a printed document, achieved by feeding a metal spire or coil through pre-punched holes near the edges of the individual pages to form a spine. Usually metal coils for wire-o binding, or a durable plastic for spiral binding, are used which firmly join the pages to each other and the cover, whilst allowing the pages to open easily and freely. The process begins with the pages being printed double-sided, along with the front and back covers – these printed pages are then cut to the relevant sizes and organised in numerical page order. The printed pages are then punched with the holes required for the binding material – once prepared, the spiral binding (plastic or, in some cases, metallic) is inserted through the holes and the edges crimped to prevent the coil from unwinding.

Practical Documents for Spiral Binding

The big advantage of spiral bound book printing is that a spiral bound book can be opened to 360 degrees, allowing the pages to fold all the way back, but remain flat and easy to reference whilst occupying little space on a desk or table. When the pages are turned, they rotate freely and easily around the coil and remain open, so you can reference the page content without having to continually hold the page open to view the contents. These specific features make this type of book an ideal choice for any reference manuals or document – cookbooks, instruction manuals, company report printing, sales presentations, and travel guides, are all good examples of books that would benefit from spiral bound book printing. Spiral book binding is also ideal for any document that requires tab indexing – page dividers and tabs are common features of reference documents such as company reports, and training or reference manuals, as specific sections of the document can be easily identified and accessed. Spiral binding is often the best solution for documents or books of between 4 and 180 leaves – effectively 360 pages, if printed double-sided.

Another advantage to this form of book printing and binding is there are no adhesives, folded signatures nor extensive preparation required, therefore making them suitable for short production runs.

Sizes

Spiral bound book binding is available in different formats and sizes, from a small pocket guide to a large travel atlas dimension. The coils are available in many diameter sizes so can accommodate books or documents of varying thicknesses. Spiral bound booklets are produced from A5 up to, what is usually the largest required size, A3. An A3 document is usually bound on the short edge and is ideal for portfolios and creative presentation booklets or documents.

Materials

Many different quality and weight paper options are appropriate for spiral bound book printing. Silk paper, with a smooth feel and sheen appearance, or gloss paper with a shiny, smooth finish which highlights any colour content, are available and practical for spiral bound finishing -recyclable paper options are also available for the more environmentally conscious.

Covers

When deciding upon your book cover, spiral bound book printing offers different options – the cover can be printed on thicker paper than the internal pages of your document, giving the book more protection and durability. The coils themselves are durable and strong, holding their shape well and are available in many assorted colours, so can complement any book cover.

Turnaround

Spiral bound book printing offers a quick production turnaround option, which may be an important consideration for your documents. Remember, the quality of the materials and finish of your document tells people a lot about your business, so it is always worth using an experienced and professional book printing and binding company to produce important books and documents.
